Dr Omid Allan has spent twenty-five years placing dental implants, and the better part of ten designing one.

He qualified in dentistry in 1996 and began his implant work in 2001. Over time his practice narrowed until it was almost entirely implants and full-arch rehabilitation — and the same problem kept arriving in his chair. A patient would come in having been told, somewhere else, that implants weren't possible for them. Their jawbone was too thin. They would need a bone graft first, which meant more surgery, more months, and thousands more dollars. Some went ahead. Many walked away and kept their dentures.

The narrow implants available at the time weren't a real answer. They were designed to clip a denture in place, not to carry a fixed bridge, and they were prone to complications when pushed beyond that.

In 2015, while completing a Master of Science in Oral Implantology at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Dr Allan started sketching an alternative: an implant narrow enough to fit thin bone, but built to hold a fixed, screw-retained bridge. He had already completed a Master of Science in Aesthetic Dentistry at King's College London.

The design and development took several years. Working with a dental milling laboratory in Melbourne, he made prototypes, tested them, and revised. The hardest problem was the insertion key — the screw joining the implant to its placement cylinder had to survive the torque of being driven into bone without fracturing, yet come away easily afterwards. The finished implant is a single piece, so there is no join between implant and abutment for bacteria to gather in, and its threads cut and advance themselves into the bone rather than relying on a pre-drilled channel.

The result was patented. It is made in Germany by Praeciso GmbH from Grade 5 titanium alloy with an SLA surface, in diameters of 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8 mm and lengths from 8 to 14 mm. It carries CE certification then MDR, was approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. Dr Allan founded BioMiniatures Pty Ltd to supply it, and showed it at the International Dental Show in Cologne in 2023.

Since 2019 he has taught the technique to other dentists in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and presented it at the Master of Oral Implantology seminar at Goethe University Frankfurt. In May 2025 he presented at ICOMS in Singapore, the biennial congress of the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; the accompanying abstract was published in the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a Fellow and Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

He practises at SYMPLANTS in North Parramatta, where he sees patients from across Sydney — most often the ones who have already been told no somewhere else.
